Hi, I’m Joanne, the person behind the Dapply Grey brand! Having always loved sewing and fashion for as long as I can remember, and after making numerous items for family and friends, I decided to take the plunge and start my own small business.
The majority of clothes my sister and I wore as little girls were made by my mum. She is so creative and talented. If I found something I liked in a shop, mum would go home and make it for me. She made every dancing costume I ever wore, and 1000’s and 1000’s of sequins were individually hand sewn on whilst watching my siblings and I at basketball, netball or swimming. If my sister and I got a new dress, so too did our Cabbage Patch dolls, and sometimes she even had one to match!!!
Her talent I believe came from her mother, my Nan – wow could she sew. Her dresses were amazing. My mum was one of four girls, and the photos of my mum with her sisters in dresses made by Nan I treasure dearly. Nan had a wonderful eye for detail and her craftsmanship was truly inspirational. I wish she was here now as I embark on this adventure – she would have been wonderful as quality control!
What’s in a Name?
The name “Dapple Grey” came to me whilst feeding my young son Jack in the middle of the night. To settle him down I began to sing a song which has been sung through many generations in our family. The song speaks of a pony named “Dapple Grey”. I have so many memories of Nan singing this to me, my siblings, cousins and even my daughter Anastasia.
I also have an addiction to Fashions on the Field, and so the pony reference worked perfectly with that aspect. When thinking of possible names I wanted to somehow include my Nan and my Mum in this venture and the name Dapple Grey did that for me. My family understood the reference instantly and I hope you too get to feel the passion through my work.
